“This very worthwhile study by Judith Carmody offers no cotton wool camouflage to either party in the savage duet of the bullying process. Here the bullied victim is held at least as much to account as the power-hungry bully. Poor self-esteem and inadequate self-images of the bullied victim are cited as areas for change if the bullying process is to be successfully arrested.
The author writes out of raw experience to the extent that the entire book is dotted with emotive passages echoing the despair and desolation suffered by those who are bullied. This is however a despair and desolation that can be overcome from within the potential victim. Indeed, this person can end up by ceasing to be a victim if the right ground work in self-knowledge is undertaken with due diligence and searing honesty.
The book follows a spiral-like structure. It folds in and backwards on itself several times in its insistence on the taking of responsibility for her or himself by the victim themselves. There is no escaping the simple truth that co-bullies unconsciously tolerate bullies. Bullies thrive when they are unconfronted and when the co-bully is unsupported in their coerced circumstances. Bullying enters if we invite it in. We do not realise we are doing this. But this is what we are doing, and Judith Carmody depicts this process with great vigour, honesty and graphic accuracy. This is a very convincing and a very moving book.
This book very rightly calls a halt, and does in an effective way."
